What is EltaMD UV Clear Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 46?
EltaMD UV Clear Tinted Broad-Spectrum SPF 46 is a face sunscreen whose registered label lists zinc oxide 9.0% and octinoxate 7.5%, plus iron oxides for the tint. EltaMD describes it as oil-free, fragrance-free, paraben-free and non-comedogenic, and names 5% niacinamide.
Which UV Clear your skin tone needs
Skin tone decides whether this is the right UV Clear. EltaMD states the tinted version works best for light, medium light, medium or medium deep skin tones. The untinted version carries a different statement from the same brand: fair, light, medium light or medium. So the tint reaches one shade deeper and drops the fairest. EltaMD calls it a sheer tint to help even skin tone, which is a tone adjustment rather than coverage.
What the tint adds
Iron oxides are the only ingredient the tinted formula adds over the untinted, alongside isopropyl palmitate and octyl stearate. Everything else matches: zinc oxide 9.0%, octinoxate 7.5%, and the same niacinamide, sodium hyaluronate, lactic acid and tocopheryl acetate behind them. EltaMD puts niacinamide at 5% and credits it with reducing the appearance of blemishes and discoloration.
If your skin is deeper than medium deep
UV Clear Tinted vs Deep Tinted is the next question if your skin sits deeper than medium deep. EltaMD makes a Deep Tinted version for exactly that, and our reading of what the brand prints for each is that anyone past medium deep should be looking at that one rather than this.
Where it sits on our shelf
UV Clear comes in an untinted formula too.
Both versions sit in the non comedogenic range.

EltaMD's directions: apply liberally to face and neck 15 minutes before sun exposure, reapply at least every 2 hours, and use a water resistant sunscreen if swimming or sweating. The label adds the standard sun protection measures, and says children under 6 months: ask a physician. Cleanse first, with EltaMD's own amino acid cleanser if you are staying in the line.
How deep is the tint?
Sheer. EltaMD calls it a sheer tint to help even skin tone and names the tones it suits: light, medium light, medium or medium deep. Buyers at other stockists split on it, with one here saying the colour does not add colour to the face or help with coverage. Our suggestion is to treat it as a tone evener rather than a base.
Is UV Clear Tinted non-comedogenic?
EltaMD states the formula is oil-free, fragrance-free, paraben-free and non-comedogenic. Non-comedogenic describes the formulation rather than promising an outcome, and EltaMD makes no promise about breakouts. The registered label carries no fragrance, which you can check against the ingredient list on this page.
What is the difference between UV Clear Tinted and the untinted version?
Iron oxides, and the skin tones EltaMD names. Both labels read zinc oxide 9.0% and octinoxate 7.5%. The tinted adds iron oxides, isopropyl palmitate and octyl stearate. EltaMD lists the untinted as working best on fair, light, medium light or medium, and the tinted on light, medium light, medium or medium deep.

Morning only, as the last skincare step and before any makeup. The tint is sheer, so it layers under foundation rather than replacing it. Octinoxate is a chemical filter, so give it the 15 minutes EltaMD asks for. EltaMD's label says: For external use only. Do not use on damaged or broken skin. Stop use and ask a physician if rash occurs.
