Collection: Skincare - Toners & Essences

Everything on this shelf goes on after cleansing and before a cream, and almost nothing agrees on what to call itself. Toner, tonic, lotion, essence, mist: the names come from different traditions rather than from different functions.

It sits between the cleansers this step follows and whatever you finish with.

Choosing a facial toner

Decide what you want the step to do. Adding water back after a wash is one job. Delivering an active before a serum is another. Wiping away what a cleanser left behind is a third, and it is the one modern formulas have largely dropped, because a cleanser that needs correcting afterwards was too harsh to begin with.

Why so many of these say lotion

In Japanese and French skincare, lotion means the watery step after cleansing, not a moisturizer. That is why the shelf holds a Treatment Lotion, a Revitalizing Lotion, a Fortifying Lotion, a Toning Lotion and an Essence-in-Lotion, none of which is a cream. If a product calls itself a lotion and pours like water, it belongs here.

Toner, essence, or both

Start with the straightforward ones: a hydrating toner built for dry skin or an alcohol-free toner for normal to combination skin, with a milky emulsion for skin that is already irritated as the gentlest reading of the step. Essences go further: treatment essence built on a 90% Pitera formula is a step in its own right, and corrective essence in mist form suits anyone who dislikes cotton pads.

Reactive skin is the one case to go carefully, so check what we group for easily irritated skin before adding a step.
Whatever you choose, it goes on damp and gets sealed by the moisturizer shelf.
This is one step of several, and where the other skincare steps sit covers the rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

On a modern formula, it puts water and humectants onto skin while it is still damp, so the next layer has something to hold. The old job of stripping away cleanser residue belongs to astringents, which is a different and much harsher category.

Mostly concentration and intent. A toner is thin and preps the skin. An essence is slightly thicker, carries more active, and is treated as its own step rather than a finishing touch. Plenty of products sit between the two and the label is not a reliable guide.

No. Routines work without it, and nothing breaks if you leave it out. It earns its place if your skin feels tight in the gap between cleansing and moisturizing, or if you want an active delivered thinly rather than inside a serum.

Straight after cleansing, onto skin still damp from rinsing, and before anything thicker. If you use both a toner and an essence, the thinner one goes first. Give each a moment to absorb rather than layering them wet on wet.
